Timbre Holiday Concert   Print

Sunday, December 18 2005, 4:00pm - 8:00pm

MINNEAPOLIS- Timbre, a Twin Cities choral ensemble, is work busily preparing for its second annual holiday concert, entitled And the Olde Made New…A Re-Imagining of Traditional Carols.  The performance will take place on Sunday December 18, 4 pm at Judson Memorial Baptist Church, 4101 Harriet Avenue South in Minneapolis.

The concert will focus on Christmas music from the 9th century to the 19th century, with a strong focus on music from the Renaissance (1450-1600).  The songs include familiar offerings that have been given new settings musically.

“The holiday season is a time of song,” said Artistic Director/Founder Dan Adolphson.  “We hear songs in churches, stores and even on the street.  What we wanted to do with this concert is to present songs that are not heard as much in public.   These songs are centuries old and have been sung by countless generations.  Timbre wants to continue the heritage and bring these songs into the 21st century so that new audiences can hear these timeless classics.”

A major highlight of this event will be the Midwest premiere performance of the work Deck the Halls by Minnesota native, Grammy winner and founder of the American Composers Forum, Libby Larsen.  This piece’s history dates back to 1992 when Larsen was asked by Gary Miller, founder and  director of the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus to write a piece that brings the singers on stage.  Larsen did just that, arranging the song which premiered that year during the chorus’ Christmas concert.

“We are excited that we are premiering this piece in the Upper Midwest,” Adolphson said.  “While this is an incredibly familiar tune to most people, Libby has written a version that will grab the audience’s attention.”

Adolphson adds Timbre will also be joined by a variety of guest instrumentalists, including The Joy Tones handbell choir from Lake Harriet Christian Church and brass players from Minnesota Brass, Inc. Drum & Bugle Core.

Timbre is also introducing a new way of reserving seats for their concerts. Beginning with the Holiday Concert, the general public will be able to reserve their seats online at Timbre’s website,  Those who reserve their seats online will receive priority seating. While one is reserving their seats online, they can also make a suggested donation of $10.   Suggested donations can also be made at the door on the day of the performance. Timbre is a 12 voice men's vocal ensemble that strives to perform both challenging and accessible sacred and secular music within the TTBB repertoire. We strive to perform music that is as diverse as the Twin Cities community, and the vast global community in which we live. Representing musicians with a variety of backgrounds, we value music as a life-long creative pursuit for all! Through music, we show our diversity and uniqueness, bridge differences, move heart and mind, and illustrate and enrich our shared humanity.
